Hot Off the Assembly Line: Ruger AR-556 MPR

AR-556 MPR

Ruger dove into their hat of tricks once again to bring out a more specialized version of their bread ‘n butter AR-15. They have developed the AR-556 MPR (“Multi Purpose Rifle”).

The AR-556 MPR has more modern and desirable features such as M-LOK, a longer barrel and an enhanced trigger system. The evolving beast that is the AR-15 seems to get outdated as fast as iPhones or computer technology, and Ruger is trying to keep pace with the looks of this model.

This is a quick overview in Ruger’s own words:

The New AR-556 Multi-Purpose Rifle (“MPR”) is a custom-built modern sporting rifle that features an 18″ nitrided alloy barrel with rifle length gas system, Ruger’s 15″ free-float handguard compatible with M-LOK accessories, the Ruger Elite 452 AR-Trigger and ergonomic Magpul furniture. The perfect rifle for a variety of uses, the AR-556 MPR is capable and versatile.

The most surprising feature on this rifle in my eyes is not the Ruger Elite 452 AR-Trigger or Magpul furniture or even the M-LOK. The fact that they introduced a rifle length gas system on an 18″ barrel with a thicker contour is unusual. Not unusual in the matter that it does not make sense, but very few companies offer such a configuration.

The rifle does offer some other unique and enticing qualities not to be found on your typical mid-range AR-15.

  • Ruger® Muzzle Brake – Radial Port Design that significantly reduces felt Recoil & Muzzle Movement. The 1/2″-28 Threaded Barrel allows for Standard Muzzle Accessories to be Installed
  • Bolt Carrier Group – Chrome-Plated Bolt Carrier (inside diameter) & Chrome-Plated Gas Key (inside diameter) provide exceptional resistance to Hot Gases. The Gas Key is staked so that it will not loosen after Extensive Firing. A Matte Black Oxide finish on the Exterior of the Bolt Carrier provides Corrosion Resistance
  • Barrel – Cold Hammer-Forged 4140 Chrome-Moly Steel Barrel w/ Ultra-Precise Rifling provides exceptional Accuracy, Longevity & Easy Cleaning. The 1:8″ Twist Rate stabilizes bullets from 35 – 77 grains & the 5.56 NATO chamber allows the use of both 5.56 NATO & .223 Rem ammunition. M4 feed ramps provide improved Operational Reliability & the Matte Black Nitrided finish provides Corrosion Resistance

To answer the final question you probably have in your mind… What’s the price for this bad boy? Ruger has set the MSRP at $899.99 for the new AR-556 MPR. Pretty reasonable for the features they are boasting on this rifle.
